“Newo Ziro” simply means “New Age”. The three main characters in the documentary film “Newo Ziro” are part of the Reinhardt family, German Sinti, who live in Koblenz, the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate and situated on both banks of the Rhine: Grandfather Bawo Reinhardt, now aged 66, his son Lulo Reinhardt (50) and his grandchild Sibel Mercan (13). All three represent the more open minded tribe of the Reinhardt family, whereas Sasha Reinhardt, the initiator of “Django’s Heirs”, a Sinti and Roma Music Festival in Koblenz, believes more in the structure of the traditional Sinti socio-organisation and values.
The documentary film provides deep insights into the Sinti culture today. There is Grandfather Bawo Reinhardt, who stands for a confident emancipation and integration of the Sinti, without loosing their roots. His son Lulo Reinhardt is one of the most respected, contemporary Gypsy musicians worldwide. His fusion of styles, including Flamenco, Latin and Brazilian jazz has found a big audience and a lot of fans in many countries. Sibel is the “little whirlwind” of the family and represents the young generation, with 3 black belts in Kung Fu and attending Grammar School.
Sasha Reinhardt, on the contrary, does not believe in a sort of “New Age”. He would rather have everything remain as it is. Sasha equals integration of the Sinti more or less with a loss of “Sinti Identity” and a loss of “Tradition”, than to recognise the sociopolitical impact and importance of it, espcially for the younger generation. Questions remain: What will be our future? What Will Our Future Be Like?
“Newo Ziro” is a must-see movie! The film is a contemporary snapshot of Sinti life, without typical stereotypes. It shows different point of views on the same Sinti culture and tradition, determined by the tension between culture, familiy, music and society.
